A review of the New York Times historical index will pull this wreck, Nov. 3, 1865, with her Capt. Young stating that he lost $400,000 in specie (face value - gee, that research was easy!). That's a nice sum, but puny compared to the documented $1.9 million face loss on SS Central America, and our (only rumored) $3.35 million face on RMS Republic. The 1865 Republic wreck gathered but a few column inches of press notice at that time - to give you an indication of its relative importance in the contemporaneous public's view when compared to the contemporaneous media coverage of SS Central America and RMS Republic.
