I came across this site by chance i was looking for my surname, always known about the incident but never the gold. My grandfather was a steward on the ship at the time HEY.F.C his address is shown as SOUTHPORT but settled in LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND, most of the crew also lived local, a stones throw from where i am now. I have sent a photograph of a painting i have of the republic to the site and i will endevour to find out as much information as i can from his 4 living children who are in there 80s.
