My grandfather, Mr. Ercole Colella, then of New York City, was a passenger in steerage for the fateful voyage of the Republic. He was returning to Italy for the immanent birth of his second child (who became my father, Anthony Colella, 21 Jan. 1909 - 5 April 2001). My grandfather died in 1954, but my father would often retell stories of his own father's adventure onboard the Republic in 1909. Your website is an interesting link to my family's past and I thank you. Even ordinary people engage in acts of quiet heroism in times of crisis.
