J.E. Crossland, Chief Officer
Here as Captain of Athenic circa 1920, James Egerton Crossland, Merchant Navy and Royal Naval Reserve born in Hamilton, Canada in 1863. Joining the Merchant Service as an Apprentice in 1881, on 8th December 1886 he survived the loss of the Barque Earlscourt which ran aground in bad weather between Pyle and Port Talbot. He rose to Master Mariner by 1894 and held a commission in the Royal Naval Reserve from 1892 to 1908, awarded the Reserve Decoration in 1909, he had participated in the invasion of Crete in 1897. Commanding various Steam Ships from 1894 to 1923. Retiring in 1923, Captain Crossland died in Liverpool in 1947.
