I have a medal which I beleive belonged to my grandfather but I am unsure which ship he served on. His name is John Coleman and the medal is silver. I see you have a bronze medal on your crew list page and I also would like to know if there where silver and bronze who got them and why? If anyone can help I would appreciate it, even if it is only to point me in the right dirction for crew information on the BALTIC and FLORIDA. |

Posted At 01:14:18 07/30/2001 Hello, Ann. I understand that the medals were in gold, silver and bronze, issued by degree of importance. Generally, gold medals went to senior officers, silver to junior officers, and bronze to other crew members. Unfortunately, the complete crewlists for Baltic and Republic (and Florida) have not been located, and I have had to fill-in details as I acquire them. The on-line crewlist for Republic was assembled from, primarily, the claims filed in the subsequent litigation - but not all crewmembers filed a claim. So, your grandfather could have been a officer/crewmember of the Republic, or Baltic (or Florida). If you can add to the information, I'd certainly add it to the website. If possible, can you provide a picture/scan of the medal? I'd be happy to add it to the site as well. Thanks. |
