HEADLINE: SALVAGERS ARGUING STATUS OF SHIPWRECK'S CARGO
DATELINE: BOSTON, MA
BODY:
It's been nearly a century since the luxury liner RMS Republic sank off Nantucket. But salvagers are still debating over who is the owner of the ship's cargo -- including a cache of gold coins now worth more than $1 billion!
The Boston Globe says that a federal judge is hearing arguments on a deep sea diver's request to dismiss a claim to the treasure made by another salvager in 1981.
The 600-foot British ship collided with an Italian vessel -- in the fog -- and went down in January of 1909.
Amazingly, only six people died in the wreck. The ship was owned by J.P. Morgan's White Star line.
