Canadian Pacific Railroad RMS Niagara
Canadian Pacific Railroad, RMS Niagara
When the 13,415-ton S.S. Niagara, on passage from New Zealand to Vancouver, hit a mine thirty miles from Whangarei she took with her to the bottom a fortune in gold. Niagara sank in deep water at a depth of 438 feet. In the ship's strongroom was stowed nearly eight tons of gold ingots packed in 295 boxes and valued at £2,500,000, originally destined to pay for war material from the United States. The marine salvage men brought up from that record depth £2,360,000.
